17-year-old found dead in hostel in Shantiniketan, father alleges foul play
Before his body was taken to Bolpur Mahakuma Hospital for post-mortem examination, his family and relatives protested, alleging foul play. After police intervention, the body was cleared for removal and an FIR was filed.
Chakraborty told media he was unable to meet the victim’s family as the situation was tense.
That same night, student activists from the TMCP and SFI demonstrated outside the VC residence over the student’s death. Demonstrations continued until Saturday, during which protesters broke down the front door and tried to burst in. Police arrested some of the protesters, all of whom were eventually released.
On the same day, Governor of West Bengal, Jagdeep Dhankhar shared a message sent by Vice Chancellor of Vishwa Bharati, Bidyut Chakraborty.
Bidyut’s message read: “Please send security. My life is in danger. The agitators have broken down the main gate and an unfortunate incident may occur if you do not send police protection for me. This is an SOS .”
While the protests have been called off, there is still a heavy police presence on campus as tension reigns.
BJP National Secretary and Vishwa Bharati University graduate Anupam Hazra attacked Chakraborty in a televised debate alleging he should have at least met the parents.
