  • The man is thought to have been drinking when he fell at the hostel

A backpacker has escaped with minor injuries after falling ten meters from a hostel balcony after a night of drinking on the Gold Coast.

The 28-year-old fell from the fifth-floor balcony on the second-floor rooftop of the Beach Road hostel in Surfers Paradise around 9pm on Tuesday.

Remarkably, the man suffered minor head injuries and a fractured leg, Queensland Ambulance Operations Supervisor Paul Young said.

Mr Young said the man hit the metal overhang on the second floor, which “breaks his fall”.

“If it had fallen on the concrete, it might have been a different story,” he said.

He added that he believed the man had “alcohol on board” when he fell.

“We are led to believe that there was alcohol and that he was near a balcony, but at this stage it is unclear how he fell from the balcony,” Mr Young said.

Fire crews were called to help paramedics reach the patient who was transferred to Gold Coast Hospital in stable condition.
