Hindu Inn Leased in AU for Next 29 Years | Allahabad News

Prayagraj: Hindu Hostel would now be part of Allahabad University for the next 29 years and 11 months as the lease deed for formal transfer of Hindu Hostel and its adjoining lands to Allahabad University (AU) at a nominal rent of Rs 1 per annum as the lease is now signed.
The legal formalities that followed were completed on December 21, AU PRO Professor Jaya Kapoor informed, on the eve of the anniversary of the birth of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya, the great visionary nationalist leader and pedagogue, who had built the hostel in 1901. It is in his honor, the Hindu Hostel is officially known as Madan Mohan Malviya University Hostel.
The AU had launched efforts to officially take over the trust-owned Hindu hostel after the executive council, the central university’s top decision-making body, at a meeting called on November 23, 2021, where the proposal was unanimously approved in this regard.
The decision to take over the hostel, which has 184 double rooms (with a capacity of 368 students), was first mooted and proposed by the Madan Mohan Malaviya Hindu Boarding Society (trust) more than 25 years ago. Subsequently, the company regularly sent communications on this subject. With no initiated action from the university, there was no development in this regard for years. When Professor Sangita Srivastava took office as Vice-Chancellor on November 30, 2020, a proposal to this effect was again sent. She followed him to pave the way for its official takeover in hire by AU. “The hostel building will need renovation and restoration apart from settling a pending electricity bill of around Rs 2.5 crore before it can be opened for allocation to students. Apart from this, several proposals are also under consideration to utilize the available land for research and education projects,” Prof Kapoor said.
Final decisions in this regard will be made in the near future as the university prepares for the implementation of the New National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 in the 2023-24 session, she said. added.
The Hindu hostel was built by the visionary nationalist leader and great pedagogue Mahamana Madan Mohan with Rs 2.5 lakh at the time entirely collected as donations to help students coming from all over the country to find easy accommodation. At the time, its name was MacDonnell Hindu Boarding House. In 1951, its name was changed to Madame Mohan Malaviya University College.
Until 1982-83, UA teachers visited the hostel frequently to hold seminars and give tutoring classes to students. However, in recent years it has fallen into disrepair with most of the toilets unusable and the building in disrepair, due to lack of proper maintenance.
The significance of this transfer can be gauged from the fact that the cost of the land of 10.10 acres of the inn located in the heart of the city is estimated at a few crores.
