Reopen Visva Bharati Hostel Immediately: HC

kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate reopening of the Visva Bharati University hostel.

Judge Rajasekhara Mantha, during the hearing, ordered that the hostel be unlocked immediately in the presence of two police officers, two student representatives and six members of the university committee trained to open the university.

The Calcutta High Court has also ordered to provide hostels for those whose exams are due to start on March 11, 2022. Police have been instructed to ensure that university officials are not prevented from entering the building administrative. Students are allowed to enter upon presentation of an identity card.

On Monday, the Calcutta High Court had requested a report from the police amid the Visva-Bharati standoff over students’ demands to reopen hostels and hold online exams.

The court ordered the Birbhum Police Superintendent to submit the report within 24 hours. He must be present (physically or virtually) at the hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

University authorities have complained about the stagnation created by the student movement at Visva-Bharati University. They went to the High Court to end the standoff.

Last week, the Calcutta High Court ordered students not to obstruct authorities “in any way”.
