Shock of students at JNU hostel unhappy: Delhi Home Minister

The student clash at Kaveri hostel at Jawaharlal Nehru University was an “unfortunate” incident, Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday. Two groups of students clashed at the university’s Kaveri Hostel on Sunday over serving non-vegetarian food in the Ram Navami mess, with police saying six students were injured in the incident.

Both groups, however, had claimed that more than 60 students were injured on both sides.

When asked about the incident by reporters, Jain said, “I am the Home Minister of Delhi. You should ask this question to the Home Minister under the Delhi Police.” He added, however, that the incident was “unfortunate”.

The leftist-controlled JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad accused each other on Sunday of throwing stones and injuring their members.

The JNU administration said Monday that no violence will be tolerated on campus and warned students not to get involved in any incident that disturbs peace and harmony on campus.
