Student injured after JNU hostel bathroom ceiling collapses
New Delhi: A student was injured on Thursday morning after part of the bathroom ceiling collapsed at a Jawaharlal Nehru University hostel, officials said.
The incident happened at the Sabarmati Hostel.
“The student was seriously injured and was taken to Safdarjung Hospital. This is a clear case of criminal negligence on the part of the hostel guards and the dean of students,” Madhurima said Kundu, Indian Student Association activist.
“We have repeatedly raised the issue of dilapidated hostel infrastructure and falling ceilings with the authorities, but the JNU administration has attempted to digress in the name of lack of funds.”
A senior university official confirmed the incident and said that due to the humidity, part of the bathroom ceiling collapsed and injured the second-year BA language student German.
“The student suffered minor injuries and was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by the hostel manager. He is fine. He has had an x-ray which shows everything is fine. CT Scan report is awaited “said the official.
The official said that there are infrastructure problems at the university and the hostels, especially the old ones, need to be repaired.
“We have no funds. We have requested Rs 54 crore to carry out major repair work in hostels but approval is awaited. We have carried out minor repair works at Brahmputra Hostel. Sabarmati Hostel will then be followed by Narmada. These are old hostels,” he added.
A senior police official, however, said: “We have not received any PCR calls or complaints so far in this regard.”
