NEW DELHI: Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam canceled the cultural evening supposed to be held on December 14 as part of the talent search competitions organized by the Union of Postgraduate Students. The program was canceled as some of the residents of the university hostel tested positive for COVID-19. All classes are suspended and university hostels will also be closed from December 15 to 19.

The notification was issued by the Registrar’s Office on Monday with the approval of the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. VC guidelines also prohibit the entry of foreigners during the period as a precautionary measure. University offices will operate with minimal capacity. So far, no cases of Omicron have been detected in the state.

In a similar scenario where precautionary measures were not followed, 43 students from the Chalmeda Anand Rao Institute of Medical Sciences in Karimnagar, Telangana, tested positive for COVID-19 after participating in the celebration events of the annual day. The college and hostels were subsequently closed. But even when covid cases were reported among students, many teachers in Telangana claimed that district officials had not authorized the temporary closure of schools. The teachers’ federation had accused authorities of forcing teachers and students into physical lessons amid the multiple positive cases.
